The Harvest Difference
Come As You Are. Leave Stronger.
At The Harvest Concept, we offer more than just a Jiu Jitsu class—we offer a place where teens and adults can challenge themselves, build lasting confidence, and find a community that supports growth from the inside out.
We’re a school, not a fight club. A place where beginners are celebrated, hard work is respected, and everyone trains at their own pace. Our students develop true martial skill—without ego, intimidation, or unnecessary pressure.

Our Jiu Jitsu program is more than modern grappling—it is a continuation of a martial lineage that stretches across centuries, cultures, and continents. At The Harvest Concept, we honor this deep legacy by blending time-tested principles with today’s training methods.
From the Korean Battlefield to the Modern Mat Our approach to Jiu Jitsu draws from ancient Korean battlefield techniques, where warriors used joint locks, throws, and grappling to subdue opponents in armor. These methods were formalized in systems such as:
-
Soo Moo Sool: The martial techniques of the Korean royal guard, emphasizing control, throws, and pressure point manipulation.
-
Yoo Sool (Yusool): Korean "soft techniques" performed in historical martial festivals and competitions, emphasizing yielding, balance, and redirection.
-
Crossroads of Cultures: Japanese Influence and Return In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese Ju Jitsu—and later Judo—had a profound influence on Korean martial arts. Choi Yong Sul, considered one of Hapkido’s founders, studied in Japan and brought these grappling techniques back to Korea, where they merged with traditional Korean practices.
-
This fusion evolved into Hapkido, a modern self-defense art centered on circular motion, joint manipulation, and dynamic throws.
-
Han Mu Do, developed by Dr. He-Young Kimm, further refined this synthesis into a complete martial art, incorporating grappling, weapons, forms, and philosophy.
-
Dr. He-Young Kimm’s Judo Legacy Dr. He-Young Kimm, founder of Han Mu Do, holds a coral belt in Judo, a testament to his lifelong dedication to the art. Judo was his first love in martial arts. He served as the captain of his Korean championship Judo team, leading them to victory. Dr. Kimm continues to represent Korean Judo with distinction, actively participating in the U.S. Judo Master's Society and attending yearly meetings and gatherings with other senior martial artists. His deep foundation in Judo informs the technical precision and philosophy found within Han Mu Do today.
The Spread of Jiu Jitsu to Brazil and the U.S. While Korean martial arts evolved, Japanese Ju Jitsu made its way to Brazil in the early 1900s. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t only Mitsuyo Maeda who taught there—others like Sada Miyako and Mario Aleixo had been teaching as early as 1909. The Gracie family, learning from Donato Pires dos Reis and others, adapted these teachings into what became known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).
BJJ emphasized live sparring (rolling), positional strategy, and submission holds. As it spread to the United States in the 1990s and early 2000s, it gained global popularity as both a sport and a self-defense method.
A Unique Path Forward At The Harvest Concept, our Jiu Jitsu is rooted in these interconnected traditions. We teach:
-
Practical grappling and submissions that reflect the battlefield origins of Korean martial arts
-
Joint locks, throws, and ground control informed by Yusool and Hapkido
-
Live rolling and positional strategy drawn from modern Jiu Jitsu
-
We carry this legacy forward with respect, clarity, and purpose—ensuring our students understand not only the "how" but also the "why" behind what they practice. This is Jiu Jitsu, through a Korean lens—adaptable, rooted, and ready for today.
